COURSE DESCRIPTION: Common renovation activities like sanding, cutting, and demolition can create hazardous lead dust and chips by disturbing lead-based paint, which can be harmful to adults and children.  To protect against this risk, on April 22, 2008, EPA issued a rule requiring the use of lead-safe practices and other actions to prevent lead poisoning.   This Federal law also states that, beginning in April 2010, contractors and all persons involved in paid renovation and repair work must be certified in lead-safe practices, and must follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination.  This applies to all persons performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb painted surfaces in homes, child-occupied facilities, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978.  This requirement to become certified in lead-safe practices applies to several professions including: General contractors, Painters, Plumbers, Carpenters and Electricians.

The new law also requires that companies who provide this training must report (to EPA) the names and  identification of all person who receive the training, beginning immediately.  The EPA additionally has stated that it will create a strict enforcement program utilizing large fines, to ensure that all person involved in paid renovation and repair work are in compliance, beginning in April 2010. You gain the knowledge to protect your clients from lead poisoning, and to protect yourself and/or your company from future lead poisoning claims.
